Yesterday, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP delivered the Government’s first new Budget for  2025/26. The budget underscored a commitment to sustained Government research and development (R&D) and increasing funding for the Department of Science and Technology (DSIT), ensuring it keeps pace with inflation.

The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce that our new President will be Professor Gordon Dougan FRS from the University of Cambridge. Professor Dougan’s Presidency will run for three years, beginning on 1 January 2025, when the Society’s current President, Professor Gurdyal Besra FRS, steps down.

The 2022 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on 1 September from 13:15 BST (UK time). The AGM is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the work of the Society over the previous year, to understand its financial position and to thank those who stand down from our Council, Committees and Divisions in December.

The ballot for Elected Members to the Impact and Influence Committee and Early Career Microbiologists Forum (ECM) Executive Committee is now open. All members who are eligible to vote will receive an email from Civica, who are managing the Society’s elections this year.

Are you based in Northern Ireland and interested in science policy? Would you like to volunteer your expertise and contribute to decision making? The Microbiology Society is looking for a member to act as our representative on the Northern Ireland Assembly All-Party Group (APG) on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

At a time when the discipline of microbiology has been thrust into the spotlight, you could be at the heart of shaping the Society’s direction and harnessing the opportunities that the pandemic has brought us.

The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce that we are establishing a Members Panel: a group of members from underrepresented communities who will convene to bring their perspectives to our efforts to ensure the Society is welcoming across all its activities. We are currently seeking the inaugural Chair and members of the Panel; members are invited to submit expressions of interest before 8 November 2021.
