The Journal of Medical Microbiology is an interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical profiles, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Microbial Genomics is the open access journal of choice for genome research spanning the breadth of microbial life including viruses, bacteria, archaea and microbial eukaryotes. We welcome articles showing novel insights, new applications, or innovative approaches using genomic data. Content ranges from comparative and functional genomics of model organisms to population-scale evolution, epidemiology and microbiome studies, and real-world genomics applications with clinical, veterinary or environmental relevance.

The Microbiology Society and the Big Ten Academic Alliance are pleased to announce a three year open publishing agreement from 2023.

Smallpox was once one of humanity’s most devastating diseases, but its origin is shrouded in mystery. For years, scientific estimates of when the smallpox virus first emerged have been at odds with historical records. Now, a new study reveals that the virus dates back 2,000 years further than scientists have previously shown, verifying historical sources and confirming for the first time that the disease has plagued human societies since ancient times.

Publishing advances across the field of microbiology for over 75 years, Microbiology – the Microbiology Society’s founding journal – has now transitioned to fully Open Access (OA). The exciting transformation for this established journal indicates the Society’s commitment to an Open Science future.  

The October 2022 edition of Microbiology Today is now available to read online. This issue, titled ‘Protists’, showcases the importance of both protistology research and engagement activities, and was curated in collaboration with Protistology-UK.

In a recently published paper, researchers in the UK and Austria have named over 65,000 different kinds of microbes. The study, led by Professor Mark Pallen at the Quadram Institute in Norwich, UK, draws on a long tradition of creating well-formed but arbitrary Latin names for new species, but applies this approach at a scale unprecedented in the history of taxonomy.

The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce that our sound science journal, Access Microbiology, has been re-launched as an innovative open research platform and is now open for submissions. It is free for authors to submit and publish on the platform during the first year of launch, so we encourage early submission to take advantage of this.

In collaboration with the Global Pneumococcal Sequencing Project, Microbial Genomics is pleased to present its latest collection on Pneumococcal Genomic Surveillance.

The Council of the Microbiology Society is delighted to announce that in 2023 our founding journal, Microbiology, will be the first to make the transition from a hybrid model to fully Open Access.

The Microbiology Society will launch a new open research platform in October 2021. The platform will incorporate many of the elements of a preprint server with our current sound science journal, Access Microbiology, in an effort to improve the rigor, reproducibility and transparency of the academic record.
