The Journal of General Virology (JGV) has appointed Professor Rachel Fearns as Editor-in-Chief from 1 January 2026.

The challenges facing society are multidisciplinary and evolving in nature. Powerful new tools are emerging in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning that can provide insights into large datasets that the human eye misses. There is also an opportunity to improve technologies based on imaging and sequence analysis to capture novel data. At the Microbiology Society, we recognise that microbiology offers powerful insight for addressing these future opportunities, and we are delighted to announce a new multidisciplinary journal joining our popular and successful portfolio: Microbiology Horizons.

The Journal of Medical Microbiology is an interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical profiles, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Researchers from the University of Queensland reveal the relationship between levels of stress hormones and increased susceptibility to secondary infection in koalas with koala retrovirus (KoRV), an often fatal disease contributing towards their declining populations, in a new paper published in the Journal of General Virology.

Access Microbiology is an open research platform. It supports the publication of replication studies, negative or null results, research proposals, data management plans, additions to established methods, case reports, software development, educational and outreach methods, and interdisciplinary work. We welcome work from the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, from bacteria and viruses to fungi, protists, archaea, and algae.

Journal of General Virology has been publishing peer-reviewed research for more than 50 years. We recognise the importance of virology as a unique discipline within microbiology, and actively collaborates with partners such as the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) to support the global virology community.

• The first systematic review on the effects of bipolar medications on the gut microbiome furthers our understanding of the connection between the gut and the brain in patients treated for bipolar disorder. 
• By analysing existing datasets, researchers concluded that the health of the gut microbiome may predict a patient’s response to treatment with drugs. 
• The results of the study could pave the way for new personalised therapeutic strategies and inspire further studies and clinical trials focused on treatments with the microbiome in mind.

• These "extremophile" bacteria have managed to adapt and thrive in extremely pure heavy water, a very hostile environment for most known life forms.
• The discovery, published in Microbial Genomics, opens new perspectives in biotechnology, plastic degradation, and could aid the search for life in extreme environments in the solar system.

The Journal of General Virology (JGV) has appointed Professor Mark Harris as its interim Editor-in-Chief from 1 May 2025.

An international team of microbiologists from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, the DSMZ—German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures, Braunschweig, Germany, and the University of Illinois, USA, has identified and described a previously unknown species of methane-producing archaea in the human gut: Methanobrevibacter intestini sp. nov. (strain WWM1085). In addition, a new variant of the species Methanobrevibacter smithii, which is referred to as GRAZ-2, was isolated. The scientists thus took another important step towards understanding the interaction between humans and the microbiome.

The Microbiology Society is pleased to announce that, thanks to the support of subscribing institutions, we have successfully met our sustainability target for the Journal of General Virology and the Journal of Medical Microbiology under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model for 2025. All content published in these titles in the next year will be published as permanently Open Access (OA).

The Microbiology Society is pleased to announce a new three year Publish and Read agreement from 2025 with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (also known as Peking Union Medical College), consistently ranked among the top medical schools in China. The Society’s model will support affiliated researchers by facilitating access to Society titles and fee-free Open Access (OA) publishing. This agreement was established in partnership with the Charlesworth Group, the Society’s representative agency in China.
