The Microbiology Society was saddened to learn of the recent death of Professor Maurice O. Moss, a long term member of the Society, having first joined in 1961.
 

International research team identify 35 viral genomes in Antarctic penguins, revealing how wildlife and viruses evolve together in extreme environments. The paper, titled 'Diversity of polyomaviruses and papillomaviruses in penguins from eastern and western Antarctica' is published in Microbial Genomics.

Researchers from the University of Queensland reveal the relationship between levels of stress hormones and increased susceptibility to secondary infection in koalas with koala retrovirus (KoRV), an often fatal disease contributing towards their declining populations, in a new paper published in the Journal of General Virology.

Journal of General Virology has been publishing peer-reviewed research for more than 50 years. We recognise the importance of virology as a unique discipline within microbiology, and actively collaborate with partners such as the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) to support the global virology community.

The Microbiology Society was saddened to learn of the death aged 94 of Dr Kenneth M Jones, who was General Secretary of the Society at an important time in its development in the 1980s.

The Microbiology Society is saddened to hear of the death of Professor Samuel (Sam) Martin, former Council member and editor of the Journal of General Virology, who died in April. The following obituary is provided with sincere thanks to Bert Rima, Professor Emeritus at Queen’s University Belfast and Dr Patricia Martin, Glasgow Caledonian University.

Microbiology brings together communities of scientists from all microbiological disciplines and from around the world, and we are looking for new Editors to join the Editorial Board.

Gut microbiome research is an exciting and dynamic field that has been progressing rapidly over the past decade. Microbiologists across the world are dedicated to understanding the many ways in which the gut microbiome affects human health and how this knowledge can be used to treat and prevent a range of diseases.

At the Microbiology Society, our vision is a world in which the science of microbiology provides maximum benefit to society. To achieve this, we need to do more to advance the understanding and impact of microbiology by connecting and empowering communities worldwide.
