This year’s World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) takes place 18–24 November. The week takes place annually to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and encourage best practice among the public, One Health stakeholders and policymakers.

The Microbiology Society is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Microbiology Outreach Prize, Professor Kim Hardie from the University of Nottingham, UK, for her project entitled ‘Spread the message, not the germs’.

Professor Hardie's project is an initiative aimed at curtailing the transmission of infectious diseases through the enhancement of children's hand hygiene practices. Through engaging and enjoyable activities, her project fosters active learning in schools, science festivals, exhibitions, and media platforms to instil effective hand hygiene practices among children. It is testament to her dedication to making a lasting impact on the awareness of microbial transmission and the importance of preventive measures.

The 2022 Microbiology Outreach Prize has been jointly awarded to Professor Kalai Mathee, Florida International University, USA and Dr Jonathan Tyrrell, University of Swansea, UK.

Do you have an interest in plant science? Would you like to contribute to plant science research, education, policy and outreach? The Microbiology Society is seeking a member to act as our representative on the Royal Society of Biology’s Plant Science Group (previously known as the UK Plant Sciences Federation).

In October 2021, Microbial Genomics published an Editorial discussing parachute research and the barriers LMIC researchers face.

As we head into 2022, the Society is celebrating the ongoing expansion of its Publish and Read model, now facilitating Open Access (OA) for more researchers than ever. With 132 new sign-ups for 2022 so far (listed below), the Society is proud to have surpassed 250 participants in its Publish and Read model, serving a range of institutions in 18 countries across 5 continental regions.

The Microbiology Society is a thriving community of people interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses, which grows by the day due to the dedication of our members who continue collaborating and sharing their knowledge at our events, through our journals and through other activities. We would like to strengthen the microbiology community by enabling our members to inspire fellow scientists and share their accomplishments, projects and scientific research during future awareness days or months.

The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce the winner of the 2021 Microbiology in Society Award, Melissa Grant (University of Birmingham, UK) for her engagement project Beyond Blue Skies Biology.

MiSAC is a registered charity formed in 1969 to promote the teaching of microbiology in schools and colleges. Its members are experts in microbiology and education and include representatives from the six organisations which sponsor its activities.
