The Microbiology Society is delighted to welcome Dr Tansy Hammarton as our new representative on the Microbiology in Schools Advisory Committee (MiSAC)

Recognised as an authority on microbiology safety in schools, MiSAC liaises with science advisors such as CLEAPSSThe Association for Science Education (ASE) and The Scottish Schools Education Research Centre (SSERC) and responds to enquiries from schools, as well as developing teaching resources for practical activities.

The Society wishes to thank our previous representative, Dr Rachel Exley for the many activities she carried out during her time on the Committee. During her time as representative, she helped develop the topic for the 31st Annual MiSAC competition for secondary school students. She also co-edited a series of scientific articles written by experts, including past and present Presidents of the Society, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of MiSAC. The articles are written for secondary school teachers and students, but are also of interest to a wider audience as they cover a wide and interesting range of microbiology topics.

We are delighted to welcome our new representative, Dr Tansy Hammarton. Dr Hammarton is currently Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation, College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, UK. She has a long-standing interest in promoting and supporting microbiology teaching in schools, and has worked with many primary and secondary schools in Glasgow over the past 15 years.

“Joining MiSAC will provide me with additional insight into the promotion of microbiology teaching in schools, and in return, I hope I will be able to share my broad experience, the resources I have developed over the years and my ideas with the rest of the Committee.” – Dr Tansy Hammarton.
