The Journal of General Virology (JGV) has appointed Professor Rachel Fearns as Editor-in-Chief from 1 January 2026.

The Journal of Medical Microbiology is an interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical profiles, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Access Microbiology is an open research platform. It supports the publication of replication studies, negative or null results, research proposals, data management plans, additions to established methods, case reports, software development, educational and outreach methods, and interdisciplinary work. We welcome work from the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, from bacteria and viruses to fungi, protists, archaea, and algae.

Microbiology brings together communities of scientists from all microbiological disciplines and from around the world, and we are looking for new Editors to join the Editorial Board.

The Microbiology Society set up this internship to support our members developing the new Centre for Microbial Interactions at Norwich Research Park. During the internship, Keni Duguma worked with colleagues at the Microbiology Society, and supported our members in Norwich to establish a stronger identity of the microbiology community in Norfolk. Our former President Judith Armitage has been working to help the Norfolk-based microbiologists strengthen the links between the vibrant group of researchers based in Norwich.

In this Q&A, Keni Duguma talks about his internship experience, and we hear from Dr Sam Rowe, Project Manager at the Centre for Microbial Interactions who supported Keni throughout the internship.

The Microbiology Society is saddened to report the death of Mike Goodfellow on 8 March 2024, following a short illness. He was 83 and still highly active. Mike was the preeminent authority on the systematics of the actinomycetes (now formally named Actinomycetota Goodfellow 2021) and was committed to using systematics as the framework for ecological understanding and effective bioprospecting of these hugely important bacteria.

Access Microbiology is excited to launch a new collection on the platform, highlighting the negative results studies published since Access Microbiology’s launch in 2019. Negative results are an integral part of sound and open science, adding value to the scientific literature that is often overlooked. We would like to thank science integrity consultant Elisabeth Bik for providing an editorial for this collection, on the importance and value of negative data.

Microbial Genomics is the open access journal of choice for genome research spanning the breadth of microbial life including viruses, bacteria, archaea and microbial eukaryotes. We welcome articles showing novel insights, new applications, or innovative approaches using genomic data. Content ranges from comparative and functional genomics of model organisms to population-scale evolution, epidemiology and microbiome studies, and real-world genomics applications with clinical, veterinary or environmental relevance.

Microbial Genomics is pleased to announce the launch of its new section ‘Metagenomics and Microbiomes’. We invite submissions that go beyond correlative studies, seeking manuscripts that leverage sequence-based approaches to provide novel biological insights.

Microbiology Society journals rely on the efforts of reviewers to ensure that we continue to publish high-quality articles. Peer reviewers pay a key role in the publishing process by donating their time and expertise to the community, allowing us to further advance the understanding of microbiology.

The Microbiology Society is pleased to announce a transformative agreement with Fudan University in China, starting in 2024. The Publish and Read model will allow affiliated researchers to publish an unlimited number of Open Access (OA) articles in the Society’s six peer-reviewed titles, as well as having full read access across the portfolio. Fudan University is ranked in the top 3 institutions in China for Life Sciences in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024. The Microbiology Society are represented in China by the Charlesworth Group.
