Microbial Genomics launches new section 'Metagenomics and microbiomes'

The Journal of General Virology (JGV) has appointed Professor Rachel Fearns as Editor-in-Chief from 1 January 2026.

The challenges facing society are multidisciplinary and evolving in nature. Powerful new tools are emerging in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning that can provide insights into large datasets that the human eye misses. There is also an opportunity to improve technologies based on imaging and sequence analysis to capture novel data. At the Microbiology Society, we recognise that microbiology offers powerful insight for addressing these future opportunities, and we are delighted to announce a new multidisciplinary journal joining our popular and successful portfolio: Microbiology Horizons.

The Journal of Medical Microbiology is an interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical profiles, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Researchers from the University of Queensland reveal the relationship between levels of stress hormones and increased susceptibility to secondary infection in koalas with koala retrovirus (KoRV), an often fatal disease contributing towards their declining populations, in a new paper published in the Journal of General Virology.

Access Microbiology is an open research platform. It supports the publication of replication studies, negative or null results, research proposals, data management plans, additions to established methods, case reports, software development, educational and outreach methods, and interdisciplinary work. We welcome work from the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, from bacteria and viruses to fungi, protists, archaea, and algae.
