We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting members onto our Champions Scheme.

The Champions Scheme is essential in helping to raise awareness of the Microbiology Society and microbiology. Champions do this in their local area by initiating activities and events of their own or participating in Society-led activities.

At Annual Conference 2024 we want to create an environment which is as welcoming and inclusive as possible for all of our delegates.

The Microbiology Society Infection Science Award aims to support the exchange of ideas and the career development of promising early career and trainee researchers, helping to translate microbiological research to the clinic. The scheme facilitates selected presenters from the Infection Forum at Annual Conference to present their work at the Federation of Infection Society (FIS) conference.

In this blog meet one of this year’s awardees, Amber Barton (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK), who will be presenting in the Infectious Disease session taking place on 15 November 2023 at FIS 2023.

The second President’s Roadshow of 2023 will take place on Tuesday 12 September at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.

The first President’s Roadshow of 2023 will take place online on Friday 24 February.

We recently launched our first fundraising initiative for members who may require support for a variety of reasons, to help them to progress and reach their full career potential.

As we look to broaden our community to be more inclusive and international, the Society supported the 8^th Conference on Beneficial Microbes in Wisconsin (USA), providing awards, opportunities and prizes for thirteen microbiologists. The conference on Beneficial Microbes brought together US and international researchers across multiple disciplines, including clinical science.

The 2022 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on 1 September from 13:15 BST (UK time). The AGM is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the work of the Society over the previous year, to understand its financial position and to thank those who stand down from our Council, Committees and Divisions in December.

The Microbiology Society responded to a call for input from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) about their draft Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategy.

The first President’s Roadshow of 2022, a joint event with Leicester Microbial Sciences and Infectious Diseases Centre (LeMID), will be held on 10 May in Leicester and hosted by Andrea Cooper (Dean of Research, Professor of Cellular Immunology, University of Leicester, UK) and Julie Morrissey (Director of LeMID, UK).

The Microbiology Society is proud to announce the launch of the Unlocking Potential Grant, helping early and mid-career microbiologists to deal with circumstances that may hold them back from achieving their full potential. The grant is supported by generous donations to the Unlocking Potential Fund, launched in mid-2021.

Are you based in Northern Ireland and interested in science policy? Would you like to volunteer your expertise and contribute to decision making? The Microbiology Society is looking for a member to act as our representative on the Northern Ireland Assembly All-Party Group (APG) on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
