The Journal of Medical Microbiology is an interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical profiles, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Microbiology Society journals rely on the efforts of reviewers to ensure that we continue to publish high-quality articles. Peer reviewers pay a key role in the publishing process by donating their time and expertise to the community, allowing us to further advance the understanding of microbiology.

Microbial Genomics is looking for early career microbiologists (ECMs) to join the Board of Reviewers. As a membership charity, we recognise that ECMs are the future of the Society and our journals and we would like to provide them with the opportunity to develop their peer review skills. Peer reviewers play a critical role in ensuring that high-quality science is published, allowing us to further advance the understanding of microbiology.

As we look to broaden our community to be more inclusive and international, the Society supported the 8^th Conference on Beneficial Microbes in Wisconsin (USA), providing awards, opportunities and prizes for thirteen microbiologists. The conference on Beneficial Microbes brought together US and international researchers across multiple disciplines, including clinical science.

Access Microbiology is an open research platform that encourages the publication of replication studies, negative or null results, research proposals, data management plans, additions to established methods, and interdisciplinary work. It covers the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, from bacteria and viruses to fungi, protists, archaea, and algae. It welcomes all approaches, from computational, biotechnology, and laboratory work, to environmental, clinical, and veterinary studies. It also publishes pedagogy papers on microbiology education.

The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce that our sound science journal, Access Microbiology, has been re-launched as an innovative open research platform and is now open for submissions. It is free for authors to submit and publish on the platform during the first year of launch, so we encourage early submission to take advantage of this.

As we head into 2022, the Society is celebrating the ongoing expansion of its Publish and Read model, now facilitating Open Access (OA) for more researchers than ever. With 132 new sign-ups for 2022 so far (listed below), the Society is proud to have surpassed 250 participants in its Publish and Read model, serving a range of institutions in 18 countries across 5 continental regions.

In 2022, Microbiology, our founding journal, will celebrate 75 years since publishing its first articles. We are excited to mark this milestone with a series of activities throughout the anniversary year which celebrate our past and look forward to our future.

Microbiology brings together communities of scientists from all microbiological disciplines and from around the world, and we are looking for new Editors to join the Editorial Board.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of the new Editors-in-Chief for Access Microbiology; Georgios Efthimiou, University of Hull, UK and Helina Marshall, Queen’s University Belfast, UK. They will be working with the in-office team to ensure the smooth transition of Access Microbiology to an open research platform.

The Journal of Medical Microbiology is looking for microbiologists who work in clinical, medical, public health and veterinary sciences to form a Board of Reviewers. Peer reviewers play a critical role in ensuring that high-quality science is published, allowing us to further advance the understanding of microbiology. 

The Microbiology Society will launch a new open research platform in October 2021. A webinar is now available showing how the platform will incorporate many of the elements of a preprint server with our current sound science journal, Access Microbiology, in an effort to improve the rigor, reproducibility and transparency of the academic record.
