New Microbiology Society policy briefing on the human gut microbiome.
Researchers have made significant advances in understanding the complexity of the human gut microbiome since the advent of genomic technologies, and technologies such as faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can now be used to manipulate patient gut microbiomes to treat specific diseases. Furthermore, medical professionals, industry stakeholders and the wider public are increasingly engaging with the concept of managing the gut microbiome to prevent disease and improve our general health and wellbeing.
In recognition of the growing interest and important advances in gut microbiome research, the Microbiology Society has published a new policy briefing outlining the current state of human gut microbiome field. The new briefing covers key areas in which gut microbiome research is being applied to tangibly improve treatment outcomes for several diseases, as well as highlighting aspects of the field which require further investment in order to fulfill their potential.
