The Journal of Medical Microbiology is an interdisciplinary journal for medical, dental and veterinary microbiology, at the bench and in the clinic. It provides comprehensive coverage of medical, dental and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, welcoming articles ranging from laboratory research to clinical profiles, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting members onto our Champions Scheme.

The Champions Scheme is essential in helping to raise awareness of the Microbiology Society and microbiology. Champions do this in their local area by initiating activities and events of their own or participating in Society-led activities.

The Microbiology Society is looking for a member to act as our representative on the Northern Ireland Assembly All-Party Group (APG) on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Learn more about publishing at our Publishing Fundamentals session on Tuesday 5 April during Annual Conference 2022. This session, led by Hebba Beech and Hilary Logan, Journal Development Editors at the Microbiology Society, will provide an insight into the lifecycle of scientific research and how you can get more involved at the Microbiology Society.

There’s only one month left until Annual Conference 2022, the Society’s first in-person annual meeting since 2019. The Society is delighted to be going back to Northern Ireland’s capital city, Belfast, which will host the meeting in its International Convention Centre.

The Teaching Microbiology in Higher Education symposium will return on Monday 4 April during the Annual Conference 2022.

The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce the composition of its first Members Panel. The Members Panel is a group of microbiologists from underrepresented communities who convene to bring their perspectives to the Society’s efforts to ensure it is welcoming across all its activities.

There is one month left to submit an abstract for Annual Conference 2022 (deadline Monday 10 January), which will take place on 4–7 April 2022 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Belfast. If you’re an ECM Forum member, don’t forget to also apply for the ECM Forum Co-Chairing Scheme when submitting your abstract.

Emma Banks, from the University of Nottingham, is the winner of this year’s Sir Howard Dalton Young Microbiologist of the Year competition.

The Microbiology Society is a thriving community of people interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses, which grows by the day due to the dedication of our members who continue collaborating and sharing their knowledge at our events, through our journals and through other activities. We would like to strengthen the microbiology community by enabling our members to inspire fellow scientists and share their accomplishments, projects and scientific research during future awareness days or months.

Our members have a unique depth and breadth of knowledge about microbiology. The Society’s role is to help unlock and harness the potential of that knowledge. At the Society we hear feedback that our members can face barriers to career progression for a variety of reasons. To help, we are fundraising for a new grant, giving our members access to specialist support to help unlock their potential.
